Concussion Assessment & Management in Pickering
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head — or a hit to the body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. While most concussions do not involve loss of consciousness, they are serious injuries that require proper assessment and a structured recovery plan.
At Your Pickering Chiropractors, Dr. Kevin Finn provides evidence-based concussion assessment and collaborative management for patients recovering from sports-related concussions, motor vehicle accidents, falls, and workplace injuries.
Common Concussion Symptoms
- Headache or pressure in the head
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Feeling foggy, sluggish, or slowed down
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
- Sleep disturbances
- Irritability or emotional changes
- Visual disturbances
Post-Concussion Syndrome: When symptoms persist beyond 4 weeks, it may indicate post-concussion syndrome. Chiropractic care targeting cervicogenic (neck-related) symptoms can be an important part of recovery.
The Role of Chiropractic in Concussion Recovery
Many concussion symptoms — including headache, neck pain, dizziness, and visual disturbances — have a cervicogenic (neck-related) component. Whiplash-type forces often accompany the head impact and cause cervical spine dysfunction that contributes significantly to persistent symptoms.
Chiropractic care addresses this cervicogenic component through:
- Gentle cervical spine assessment and mobilization
- Soft tissue therapy for neck and upper back tension
- Vestibular rehabilitation guidance
- Return-to-activity planning in coordination with your medical team
- Concussion baseline testing coordination where applicable
Our Approach
Concussion management requires a collaborative, graduated approach. Dr. Finn works within established concussion protocols and communicates with your physician, neurologist, or specialist where appropriate. We follow graduated return-to-sport and return-to-learn protocols for student athletes.
Can I see a chiropractor right after a concussion?
It depends on symptom severity. Mild symptoms: yes, early conservative care is often beneficial. Severe symptoms (repeated vomiting, seizure, worsening confusion): go to emergency first. Dr. Finn will assess appropriately at your first visit.
Is chiropractic manipulation safe after a concussion?
Dr. Finn uses gentle, modified techniques in the acute phase of concussion recovery — avoiding high-velocity manipulation until appropriate. Safety is always the first priority.
Is concussion care covered by insurance?
MVA-related concussion care is covered through your auto insurance (SABS). Sports concussions may be covered by extended health benefits. WSIB covers workplace injury concussions. We direct-bill on your behalf.
